LOS ANGELES, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Actor and Massachusetts native Matt Damon is in talks to headline a new film about assassinated Sen. Robert Kennedy, Deadline Hollywood said.

"Seabiscuit" director Gary Ross is to head up the bio-picture, which screenwriter Steven Knight is adapting from Evan Thomas' book "Robert Kennedy: His Life."

Whether Damon officially signs on to the project depends on how much he likes Knight's finished screenplay, the celebrity news Web site said.

Damon's film credits include "Good Will Hunting," "Ocean's 11," "Dogma," "The Departed" and the upcoming "Green Zone."

He is a current Oscar nominee for his work in "Invictus."
