'Disappointing' honors go to Chinese film

BEIJING, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Authors of a film review book said "A Simple Noodle Story" from Chinese director Zhang Yimou earned a trio of "disappointing" awards.

China's official state-run Xinhua news agency said the Youth Film Handbook named "Noodle" the "most disappointing film" Saturday, while also bestowing "most disappointing director" and "most disappointing actor" honors on the film.

"City of Life and Death" and its director, Lu Chuan, also earned mentions in the review book thanks to "most disappointing film" and "most disappointing director" honors.

Youth Film Handbook editor-in-chief Cheng Qingsong said winners would receive their trophies in the mail. Winners were chosen by 20 independent film critics as well as Internet users, Cheng added.

"The awards are initiated to sweep lousy films off the screen in the country," Cheng offered.
