NEW YORK, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Writer-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are to begin shooting "It's Kind of a Funny Story" in New York early next month, Focus Features said.

Focus said it holds the worldwide rights to the project, which it is co-financing with Wayfare Entertainment.

Focus Chief Executive Officer James Schamus made the announcement Monday on the studio's big-screen adaptation of Ned Vizzini's 2006 novel of the same name.

The comedy-drama's cast includes Keir Gilchrist, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Viola Davis, Zoe Kravitz, Aasif Mandvi, Lauren Graham and Jim Gaffigan.

"Anna and Ryan are two of today's finest independent filmmakers," Schamus said in a statement. "The compassion they always show towards the characters in their movies will be particularly in evidence in this humane comedy, especially as performed by these wonderful actors."

The film is about a stressed-out teen who checks himself into a mental health clinic, then learns the youth ward is closed and he will be stuck in the adult ward, Focus said.
