LOS ANGELES, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- "Where the Wild Things Are" was No. 1 at the U.S. box office this weekend, grossing an estimated $32.5 million, Box Office Mojo said.
Director Spike Jonze's live-action adaptation of Maurice Sendak's children's book highlighted a weekend in which two other new releases also performed well, the Los Angeles Times said.
"Law Abiding Citizen," starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, opened at No. 2 with $21.2 million and "The Stepfather," opened at No. 5 with $12.3 million -- both films meeting box-office analysts' expectations, the Times said.
"Paranormal Activity," which has been in theaters for four weeks on a growing number of screens each week, grossed an estimated $20.2 million to finish the weekend at No. 3.
Last week's No. 1, "Couples Retreat," took in an estimated $217.9 million to finish at No. 4 in its second week.
The rest of this weekend's top 10 were "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" ($8.1 million); "Zombieland" ($7.8 million; "Toy Story/Toy Story 2 (3D)" ($3 million); "Surrogates" ($1.9 million); and "The Invention of Lying" ($1.9 million).
