Sophia Loren is returning to the big screen for her first starring role in nearly a decade with a film directed by her son, Edoardo Ponti.

The Italian actress last appeared in the musical "Nine" as Daniel Day-Lewis' mother in 2009, but her last starring role was in 2004 in "Too Much Romance … It's Time For Stuffed Peppers."

Loren is set to star in "La voce umana," or "The Human Voice," based on a one-person play written by French poet and writer Jean Cocteau.

Filming will take place over the course of three weeks in Rome, Naples and Ostia in Italy.

It's not the first time Loren's son has directed her from behind the camera. She also starred in his 2002 drama "Cuori estrani," or "Between Strangers."
