John Mayer said he knew he'd sing again

John Mayer said he always knew he'd sing again after a vocal cord injury during his first nationally televised performance in three years on the "Today Show" Friday.

The singer-songwriter has undergone surgeries and botox injections in his neck to remedy a vocal cord ailment that prevented him from singing. He said he was never concerned he wouldn't be able to sing again.

"Thankfully, I always knew there was going to come a day when I'd sing again," he said. "It was just a matter of when."

He made an appearance Friday on the "Today Show" to promote his seventh-studio album, "Paradise Valley," performing new song "Paper Doll." There's been some speculation the new single is a response to ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift's open-letter song to Mayer, "Dear John." He didn't exactly clear up those rumors during an interview on the "Today Show."

"Yeah, songwriters write songs because of people, about people," he said. "Anything someone else wrote is their reception of a song. I don’t get involved with (it). It's none of my business."
