Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Colin Jost says his mom was thrown off by his son Cosmo's name.
The 39-year-old actor, writer and comedian appeared on Thursday's episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, where he shared his mom's reaction to him and his wife, actress Scarlett Johansson, naming their baby boy Cosmo.
When asked how he and Johansson came up with the name, Jost jokingly said they were assigned it at the hospital.
"I think the hospitals now are just so overwhelmed that when the baby comes out, they're just like, 'Uh, that's Frank. Go.' You know, whatever," he said.
Jost said his family is "very supportive, always," but was confused by the name.
"My mom, I would say, was slightly thrown by it and didn't quite understand it," the star said. "I don't know if she thought it was kind of a hippie thing."
"She would call us and say -- you know, like, after three or four days -- she'd be like, 'Cosmo.' She'd be like, 'And now, is it final? Like, did you submit the birth certificate?' And we're like, 'Oh, yeah. We did that at the hospital,'" he added. "And she's like, 'Okay. Interesting.'"
Jost said his mom suggested the names Cosimo and Cosmos, the name of a patron saint, as alternatives.
"We don't need more worse options, variants on Cosmo, but thanks, Mom," he said.
Jost and Johansson married in October 2020 and announced in August that they welcomed their first child.
"OK, OK, we had a baby," Jost said on Instagram. "His name is Cosmo. We love him very much."
Jost is a writer and actor on Saturday Night Live, while Johansson is known for playing Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Johansson and Walt Disney Studios reached a settlement over streaming pay for the film Black Widow this week.
