Donkey Kong expansion set for Super Nintendo World in Japan

Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Universal Studios Japan will be expanding its Super Nintendo World area with a new section themed after Donkey Kong.

The Donkey Kong expansion will open in 2024 and simulate the experience of walking through a lush jungle where Donkey Kong and his friends live.

Universal Studios Japan will be constructing a roller coaster for the expansion along with interactive experiences, themed merchandise and food.

Legendary video game developer Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator behind Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong, is working with the Universal and Nintendo creative teams on the area.

Super Nintendo World was opened in Osaka, Japan, in March. The theme park started with an area based on Mario's Mushroom Kingdom and features the ride Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge.

The Donkey Kong expansion will increase Super Nintendo World's size by approximately 70%.

"I am very happy to be able to make the world of Donkey Kong a reality following the world of Mario. I am looking forward to creating a thrilling Donkey Kong experience with the amazing team at Universal. It will take some time until it is completed, but it will be a unique area for not only people who are familiar with Donkey Kong games, but for all guests," Miyamoto said in a statement.
