June 15 (UPI) -- Nintendo held its annual E3 Direct presentation on Tuesday where it announced a new 2D Metroid game and provided a new trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.
Breath of the Wild 2 closed the show and featured cinematic and gameplay moments. The title will be released in 2022.
Main protagonist Link was skydiving in the clip and was given a strange new item on his arm that allowed the hero to use different abilities such as the use of fire.
The game will explore the skies above Hyrule and feature a new host of enemies. Princess Zelda was seen falling into a dark pit.
Nintendo is also celebrating The Legend of Zelda's 35th anniversary with a Game and Watch portable device that will contain classic games The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. The handheld will launch on Nov. 12.
Metroid: Dread, the fifth entry in the classic Metroid series, goes back to the franchise's 2D roots and will be released for the Nintendo Switch on Oct. 18.
Metroid: Dread is the first new 2D Metroid game in over 19 years. Main character Samus Aran will be exploring a new planet while being hunted by the ominous E.M.M.I.
Kazuya from the Tekken series was the next character announced for crossover fighting game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
The villainous fighter threw a selection of Super Smash Bros. characters off a clip during a cinematic cutscene.
Nintendo will also be releasing a new entry in the WarioWare series titled WarioWare: Get it Together, which will be released for the Switch on Sept. 10. Two players can take part in a selection of wacky and comedic mini games.
Mario Party is paying homage to its past with Mario Party Superstars, which will be released for the Switch on Oct. 29. Superstars will include five game boards from the series' Nintendo 64 era and 100 mini games from throughout the franchise's history.
Other announcements from the E3 Direct included Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania being released for the Switch on Oct. 5, role-playing game Shin Megami Tensei V coming exclusively to the Switch on Nov. 12, and a remastering of Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2 coming to the Switch on Dec. 3.
