June 14 (UPI) -- NBC News' Kristen Welker is a new mom. The 44-year-old TV journalist and Weekend Today co-host welcomed her first child, daughter Margot Lane, with her husband, John Hughes, via surrogate on Saturday, Today reported Monday.

In an e-mail to Today, Welker and Hughes said they named their baby girl after Welker's grandmother Margaret. Lane is a family name in Hughes' family.
Welker and Hughes were in the room with their surrogate as she gave birth. Welker helped catch Margot, while Hughes cut the umbilical cord.
"We stayed in rooms next to each other and visited throughout so that we and little Margot could thank her for bringing Margot into the world," Welker said of her surrogate.
"Also, Margot is truly the love of our lives. Seeing her precious face and looking into her eyes had made every minute of our journey worth it," she added.
Hoda Kotb, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker and the other Today co-hosts celebrated the news during Monday's episode of the show.
"We are thrilled to announce that Margot Lane Walker Hughes was born early Saturday morning via surrogate," Carson Daly said.
"When you look at Kristen, you know how hard they worked for that moment right there. Welcome to the world, little Margot Lane! Congrats to Kristen and John," Guthrie added.
Welker and Hughes married in March 2017. The couple announced on Today in April that they were expecting their first child after a nearly three-year struggle with infertility.
