WWE WrestleMania Backlash: Roman Reigns battles Cesaro

May 17 (UPI) -- Universal Champion Roman Reigns defended his title against Cesaro and WWE Champion Bobby Lashley had his title on the line against Drew McIntyre and Braun Strowman in a Triple Threat match at WWE WrestleMania Backlash.

Reigns battled Cesaro in the main event on Sunday. The champ was accompanied to the ring by his special counsel Paul Heyman after he told his cousin Jey Uso to stay behind. Reigns had issues earlier in the night with Jey Uso's twin brother Jimmy Uso who wasn't convinced that Reigns could win.

The bout represented Cesaro's first world championship match in WWE. Heyman previously remarked on SmackDown Friday that Reigns has been in 39 world championship matches, with his contest against Cesaro being his 40th.

Cesaro surprised Reigns at first with a couple of near-falls, forcing the Universal Champion to exit the ring and take a breather as Heyman gave advice. Cesaro continued to stay in control by later avoiding a Superman punch and nailing Reigns with a Pop-Up Uppercut.

Reigns started to fight back by focusing on Cesaro's right arm. Reigns was able to counter Cesaro's Neutralizer with an Armbar and landed a Superman Punch after Cesaro attempted a Springboard.

The Tribal Chief won the match and retained the Universal Championship after he locked in the Guillotine. Cesaro tried to fight out of the submission hold and slammed Reigns down to the mat but it wasn't enough as he passed out, causing the referee to end the match.

Jey Uso entered the ring afterwards and placed a lei around Reigns' neck, furthering cementing his loyalty to his cousin. Jey Uso then relentlessly attacked Cesaro before Seth Rollins also entered the ring to assault Cesaro.

Rollins placed Cesaro's injured right arm inside of a steel chair and slammed it into the ring post as WrestleMania Backlash went off the air.

Lashley had the odds stacked against him against McIntyre and Strowman in the Triple Threat match. Lashley was joined at ringside by his manager MVP.

The All Mighty formed a temporary alliance with McIntyre to help take down Strowman. The unlikely duo worked together to deliver a thunderous Suplex to Strowman. The Monster Among Men later got revenge by using the steel steps outside the ring.

McIntyre sent Strowman over the barricade with a Claymore and continued to fight with Lashley up the entrance ramp. The Scottish Warrior slammed Lashley into the WrestleMania Backlash LED board and later tossed him through it, causing an explosion that took Lashley out momentarily.

McIntyre went back to fight Strowman who slammed him into the announcer's table. McIntyre, back inside the ring, was able to land another Claymore and was poised to win the match until Lashley returned and threw him out of the ring.

Lashley then delivered a Spear to Strowman to win the match and remain WWE Champion.

Raw Women's Champion Rhea Ripley also defended her title in a Triple Threat match against Charlotte Flair and Asuka. Flair pulled out all the stops during the bout by performing an impressive Moonsault from the top rope in order to crash land onto Ripley and Asuka outside the ring.

The Queen was also able to land a double Natural Selection on both Ripley and Asuka, but it wasn't enough.

Ripley won the match retained her title after Flair was sent outside the ring, allowing her to nail Asuka with the Riptide for the three count. Ripley taunted Flair her championship belt afterwards.

Other moments from WrestleMania Backlash included United States Champion Sheamus defeating Ricochet; Rey and Dominik Mysterio defeating Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode to become the new SmackDown Tag Team Champions; Damian Priest defeating The Miz in a Lumberjack match that featured zombies surrounding the ring in reference to Netflix's upcoming Army of the Dead film; and SmackDown Women's Champion Bianca Belair successfully defending her title against Bayley.

Rey and Dominik Mysterio have become the first-ever father-son duo to become Tag Team Champions in WWE history.

Ziggler and and Roode attacked Dominik Mysterio backstage before the bout, which kept him out of the match for an extended period. Rey Mysterio fought alone until his son was able to make it to the ring. Dominik Mysterio won the match after he landed a Frog Splash on Roode.
