June 5 (UPI) -- Nintendo has announced that Pokemon Sword and Shield is set be released for the Switch console on Nov. 15.
The company made the announcement on Wednesday during a livestreamed Nintendo Direct presentation which also highlighted new Pokemon and gameplay features that are coming to Sword and Shield.
The games, which will also be released as part of a double pack, will be taking place in a new setting known as the Galar Region. The new location features contemporary cities, vast plains, snow-covered mountains and Pokemon living and working together alongside humans.
The Galar Region's most popular form of entertainment revolves around Pokemon battles which take place inside packed stadiums full of excited fans. The region also features the expansive Wild Area where players can explore and find new Pokemon depending on the time of day and weather.
Unique to Sword and Shield will be the ability to transform your Pokemon during battle into giant, towering forms of themselves. The process, known as Dynamaxing, can be used once during battle, lasts for three turns, and makes Pokemon stronger then ever.
Additionally, up to four players can team up online or locally through multiple Switch systems to take on powerful Dynamax Pokemon together. Once the enemy is defeated, it can be captured.
The story of Sword and Shield revolves around becoming the new Pokemon champion of the Galar Region which will involve defeating reigning champion Leon who is undefeated. Leon also has a brother named Hop who will serve as the player's rival throughout the game.
Players will be encountering brand-new Pokemon on their journey and once again will have the choice to begin the game with either a fire, water or grass-type Pokemon. The options include Grookey, a grass type known as the chimp Pokemon, Scorbunny, a fire type known as the rabbit Pokemon and Sobble, a water type known as the water lizard Pokemon.
Other new Pokemon coming to Sword and Shield include Wooloo, the sheep Pokemon; Gossifleur, the Flowering Pokemon who can evolve into Eldegoss; Drednaw, the bite Pokemon; and Corviknight, the raven Pokemon.
The Direct Presentation ended with a look at new legendary Pokemon Zacian, who holds a sword in his mouth, and Zamazenta, who has a shield around his face.
