'God of War' wins big at the 2018 Game Awards

Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The fifth annual Game Awards took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles to honor and celebrate the greatest video games of 2018.

Geoff Keighley, former video game journalist and creator of the show, hosted the event Thursday, which was livestreamed online across various channels including YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook, Mixer, Steam TV, PlayStation 4 and Xbox Live.

God of War took home the biggest prize of the night, Game of the Year, over Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Celeste, Spider-Man and Monster Hunter: World.

God of War, a PlayStation exclusive, was nominated in eight categories alongside Red Dead Redemption 2 and also took home Best Game Direction and Best Action-Adventure Game.

"Kratos and Atreus conquered giants of all sizes, including #TheGameAwards. Congrats to God of War for winning Game of the Year!" PlayStation said on Twitter following the win.

Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar's western, open world epic, won Best Narrative, Best Score/Music, Best Audio Design and Best Performance for actor Roger Clark, who portrayed main protagonist Arthur Morgan.

Fortnite, Epic Games' online multiplayer shooter, won two awards including Game of the Year and Best Multiplayer Game.

Other award winners included Dragon Ball FighterZ winning Best Fighting Game, Monster Hunter: World with Best Role-Playing Game, Overcooked 2 with Best Family Game, Celeste with Best Independent Game, Return of the Obra Dinn with Best Art Direction, Forza Horizon 4 with Best Sports/Racing Game and Florence with Best Mobile Game.
