Meghan Markle visits Grenfell Tower survivors in London

Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Meghan Markle visited with survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire during an outing Wednesday in London.

The 37-year-old Duchess of Sussex spent the evening cooking with women at the Hubb Community Kitchen ahead of Thanksgiving.

Markle helped the kitchen create Together: Our Community Cookbook in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire, which killed 72 people in June 2017. Proceeds from the book, which debuted in September, benefit the kitchen and community.

"Today, The Duchess of Sussex is visiting the Hubb Community Kitchen to see how the proceeds from 'Together: Our Community Cookbook' are already making a difference locally. #CookTogether," Kensington Palace wrote on Twitter.

"The Duchess has made regular private visits to the kitchen since January, which was set up by women from the community affected by the Grenfell Tower fire. Through the power of cooking, the women have been able to connect, heal and look forward," the palace said.

Markle was greeted by Zaheera Sufyaan from Hubb Kitchen and Abdurahman Sayed of the Al Manaar Heritage Center, according to People. Together: Our Community Kitchen has sold more than 40,000 copies in the U.K. and raised $270,000 since its release.

"Thanks to the funds raised from 'Together', the kitchen has been completely renovated, with the women's input, capturing the joyful spirit of the Hubb Community Kitchen and providing a safe, professional space to unite the community through food #CookTogether [photo by] Ledbury Constr," Kensington Palace wrote.

"The women are now able to use the kitchen seven days a week, and have been empowered to gain qualifications and start their own new projects helping others in their community to benefit from the kitchen," the palace added.

Markle married Prince Harry at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in May. The couple announced in October they are expecting their first child in the spring.
