Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Queen Elizabeth gave an affectionate toast on her son Prince Charles' 70th birthday.

The 92-year-old British monarch praised Charles as a "passionate and creative" person and a "wonderful father" in a speech at his birthday celebration Tuesday at Buckingham Palace.

Elizabeth is parent to Charles, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Princess Anne with her husband, Prince Philip. She likened raising Charles to "planting a tree and being able to watch it grow."

"Over his 70 years, Philip and I have seen Charles become a champion of conservation and the arts, a great charitable leader -- a dedicated and respected heir to the throne to stand comparison with any in history -- and a wonderful father," Elizabeth said.

"Most of all, sustained by his wife Camilla, he is his own man, passionate and creative," she added. "So this toast is to wish a happy birthday to my son, in every respect a duchy original."

Buckingham Palace marked Charles' birthday by sharing a slideshow of archive photos from throughout the years.

"Wishing His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales a very Happy 70th Birthday," the post reads.

In addition, Clarence House posted a photo of Charles with his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, prior to the prince's birthday party.

"The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall at Clarence House this evening before departing for The Prince's 70th birthday event at Buckingham Palace," the post reads.

Charles' sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, attended the celebration with their respective wives, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. Markle was spotted arriving in an updo and diamond earrings, according to E! News.
