Nov. 13 (UPI) -- John Mayer decided to get sober in the wake of Drake's 30th birthday party.

The 41-year-old singer and musician said in a new interview with Complex that he quit drinking after making "quite a fool" of himself at Drake's celebration in October 2016.

"I have the most amazing last-night-of-my-life-drinking story. It was Drake's 30th birthday party, and I made quite a fool of myself," he told the magazine.

Meyer said he had a moment of self-reflection after experiencing a six-day hangover after the party.

"It took me weeks to stop doing this every morning I woke up. And then I had a conversation with myself. I remember where I was. I was in my sixth day of the hangover. That's how big the hangover was," the star recalled.

"I looked out the window and I went, 'OK, John, what percentage of your potential would you like to have? Because if you say you'd like 60, and you'd like to spend the other 40 having fun, that's fine,'" he said. "I went, '100.'"

Meyer redirected his energy into his music, releasing the album The Search for Everything and completing four tours in 2017. He debuted the single "New Light" in May and is working on a new album.

"If you look at drinking the way you would look at anything else, which is risk-reward, what am I giving up? What am I getting? It's some of the worst odds that ever existed," the star said.

Meyer celebrated his first year of sobriety in a tweet to fans in October 2017.

"One year ago today, i decided to give drinking a break. A very personal thing for everyone. For me, a constant return on investment," he wrote. "I post this because I want people to know that 'that's enough for now' is on the menu, so to speak."
