Beyonce, Bruno Mars among winners at 2018 BET Awards

June 25 (UPI) -- The 2018 BET Awards were presented Sunday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, with big names taking home the top awards.

Beyonce won for best female R&B/pop artist and Bruno Mars won for best male in the same category, even though neither artist released a new album last year. Beyonce did, however, release Everything is Love, a joint album with her husband, Jay-Z, on June 16, though that was after the April 1 2017 and March 31 2018 timeframe the awards show includes.

Drake was recognized for having the best video of the year with God's Plan, in which the Canadian rapper gives away food and money to people in the Miami area.

Cardi B continued her meteoric rise with an award for best female hip hop artist and Pulitzer Prize-winner Kendrick Lamar further cemented his status as rap's most prolific award recipient with his win for best male hip hop artist.

Migos was recognized as the best group, while DJ Khaled, Rihanna and Bryson Tiller won for best collaboration with their radio-friendly hit, Wild Thoughts.

"Big up the young world, all the young kids, the young geniuses," Khaled said when accepting the award. "All of y'all are leaders. All of y'all are kings and queens, and we love you."

In the movies category, Black Panther won for best film and its star, Chadwick Boseman, took home the best actor award.

Comedian Tiffany Haddish was awarded for best actress for her breakout role in Girls Trip, which was also nominated for best film.

Haddish accepted her award in a pre-recorded sketch with host Jamie Foxx.
