June 17 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz beat talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel 11-9 at the first Blobfish Basketball Classic at Texas Southern University's Health and Physical Education Arena in Houston on Saturday.

The progressive comedian, 50, revealed details of the one-on-one game last week on Jimmy Kimmel Live! against the Republican senator from Texas. The match is slated to air on Monday's edition of the ABC show.

"The reason this is happening is because after Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals, I likened Sen. Cruz to a blobfish," Deadline.com quoted Kimmel as saying. "And he did not like that ... So, he challenged me to a game of one-on-one. And I accepted. And now it's gonna happen."

Kimmel shared a photo of him preparing for the game by lying on the floor while his sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez stretched out his leg.

Conservative politician Cruz, 47, tweeted before the game the links to the two charities he and Kimmel were playing for: Generation One and Texas Children's Hospital. Because he lost, Kimmel donated $50,000 to Generation One, an early-childhood education program Cruz supports.
