'Band's Visit,' 'Harry Potter,' 'Angels' win big at the Tonys

June 10 (UPI) -- The Band's Visit was named Best Musical and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was deemed Best Play at the Tony Awards ceremony in New York Sunday night.

The Band's Visit stars Tony Shalhoub and Ari'el Stachel won for Best Actor in a Musical and Best Featured Actor in a Musical, while their fellow cast member Katrina Lenk was elected Best Actress in a Musical and their leader David Cromer won for Best Director of a Musical. The show also took home the prizes for Best Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical and Best Orchestrations.

Johny Tiffany was presented with the Best Director of a Play statuette for helming Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which won for Best Costume Design in a Play, Best Lighting Design of a Play, Best Scenic Design of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Play, as well.

Angels in America won the Best Revival of a Play title, while its stars Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane won for Best Actor and Best Featured Actor in a Play respectively.

Glenda Jackson won for Best Actress in a Play and her castmate Laurie Metcalf picked up the prize for Best Featured Actress in a Play for Three Tall Women.

Lindsay Mendez went home with the trophy for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and Justin Peck picked up the statuette for Best Choreography for Carousel.

The Tony for Best Scenic Design of a Musical went to SpongeBob SquarePants and Once on This Island won for Best Revival of a Musical. My Fair Lady won the award for Best Costume Design in a Musical.

Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban hosted the CBS telecast, which honored excellence in Broadway theater. Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants went into the competition with a leading 12 nominations apiece.
