May 19 (UPI) -- British pop star Elton John sang "Circle of Life" at a lunchtime wedding reception Queen Elizabeth II held Saturday for her grandson Prince Harry and his new bride Meghan Markle.

He also performed "Tiny Dancer."

"Prince Harry asked Sir Elton to perform at the reception which was hosted by Her Majesty The Queen at St. George's Hall, Windsor Castle," Kensington Palace said. "Sir Elton performed for the newly married couple in recognition of the close connection he has with Prince Harry and his family."

John was a friend of Harry's mother Princess Diana and sang "Candle in the Wind" at her funeral in 1997.

Harry and Markle's wedding cake -- a spongey confection with filling made from Amalfi lemon curd and elderflower buttercream, as well as elderflower syrup made at the monarch's residence in Sandringham -- was served at the reception where Markle, Harry, Prince Charles and Prince William gave speeches.

Harry and Markle got engaged in November after dating for more than a year. The prince proposed as they were cooking dinner during a quiet night at home. They exchanged wedding vows in front of about 600 guests at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle Saturday.
