May 17 (UPI) -- Hilary Duff's rep says the star "reached a breaking point" with her chain-smoking neighbor.

The 30-year-old actress issued a statement through her rep Thursday to E! News after publicly calling out her neighbor Dieter Addison on Instagram.

"Hilary and her young son have been subjected to excessive secondhand smoke, late night noise, garbage in the hallways, and an overall hazardous living environment from this man for months now," the rep said. "She tried numerous times in polite ways to handle this situation including countless sessions with the landlords of the building."

"As every mother knows, protecting your kid has to come first and foremost and that is her primary goal," the rep added. "She reached a breaking point after a 15 hour work day and yet another sleepless night."

Duff, who is parent to 6-year-old son Luca with ex-husband Mike Comrie, had slammed Addison in a series of Instagram Stories posts Wednesday. She called out Addison by name, and also posted a photo of his Instagram profile picture.

"My neighbor smokes cigarettes and weed all night long. My apartment reeks. Seriously, what do I do?" the star asked her followers.

"We know your parents pay your rent. We know you've never worked a day in your life -- must be nice," she said to Addison. "Have some respect for your neighbors who work hard to live in that building."

Addison told Page Six he is a heavy cigarette smoker, but said he is sober and does not smoke marijuana. He alleged Wednesday to Page Six that Duff's boyfriend, DJ and singer Matthew Koma, attempted to punch him in the face following his conflict with the actress.

"I had to call the police this morning," Addison said. "I tried to avoid his fist, but he hit me on the head. So I pushed him out of the apartment, but I didn't assault him."

Koma's rep told E! News Addison's allegations are untrue.
