May 2 (UPI) -- The last remaining outlaws are on the run in the latest trailer for Rockstar Games' upcoming open-world western sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2.

The clip, released Wednesday, features new protagonist Arthur Morgan. Morgan is a member of the Van der Linde gang, a group that commits crimes including bank and train robberies.

The trailer also features the game's sprawling western world that is filled with open ranges, dense forests and lively towns.

"America, 1899. The end of the wild west era has begun as lawmen hunt down the last remaining outlaw gangs. Those who will not surrender or succumb are killed," reads the synopsis.

"After a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee. With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him," it continues.

The Van der Linde gang, also known as Dutch's Gang, was featured in the first Red Dead Redemption, as protagonist John Marston left the group of criminals. This makes the upcoming entry a prequel to the original title.

A character who appears to be a younger John Marston is seen in the new trailer as he is being held at knifepoint.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is set for release on the Playstation 4 and Xbox One on Oct. 26.
