Feb. 14 (UPI) -- American Idol and Smash alum Katharine McPhee has been tapped to play the role of Jenna in the Broadway musical Waitress.

McPhee is scheduled to make her Broadway debut April 10 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. She is scheduled to appear in the show through June 17, producers announced Wednesday.

Based on writer-director Adrienne Shelly's 2007 film of the same name, the musical opened in April 2016. Previous actresses to play Jenna include Sara Bareilles and Jessie Mueller.

"Waitress tells the story of Jenna, an expert pie maker in a small town, who dreams of a way out of her loveless marriage," a synopsis said. "A baking contest in a nearby county and the town's new doctor may offer her a chance at a new life, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes to happiness. But Jenna must find the courage and strength within herself to rebuild her life. This musical celebrates friendship, motherhood, and the magic of a well-made pie."
