Google honors actress Katy Jurado with new Doodle

Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Google is celebrating the life of film star Katy Jurado on what would have been her 94th birthday with a new Doodle.

Google's homepage features an illustration of the actress by artist Ana Ramirez against a backdrop inspired by her role in the film High Noon. Jurado is also seen holding a rose which symbolizes her birthplace of Guadalajara, Mexico, nicknamed the city of roses.

Jurado achieved stardom during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema starring in La vida inutil de Pito Perez in 1943 before being cast in her first Hollywood film, 1951's Bullfighter and the Lady. Jurado's limited grasp of English led to her delivering her lines by memorizing the way they sounded.

She was then cast 1952's High Noon as Helen Ramirez, a role that led to Jurado becoming the first Latin American actress to win a Golden Globe.

Jurado would go on to win three Silver Ariel Awards and also become the first Latin American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award.

"Off-screen, Jurado was a tenacious and spirited woman who captivated everyone around her," Google said of Jurado. "While she was stunningly beautiful, her portrayals transcended the stereotyped, over-sexualized roles written for Mexican women at the time. Her talent at depicting a range of characters helped to expand the parts available to Mexican and other Latinx actresses in Hollywood today."
