Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The Partridge Family icon David Cassidy died in a Florida hospital Tuesday evening. He was 67.

"On behalf of the entire Cassidy family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, our uncle, and our dear brother, David Cassidy," the entertainer's spokeswoman JoAnn Geffen said in a statement to TheWrap. "David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long. Thank you for the abundance and support you have shown him these many years."

TMZ cited family sources as saying the singer had been on life support since Monday and his loved ones decided to remove him from it Tuesday.

With Cassidy when he died were his brothers Shaun, Patrick and Ryan, his children Beau and Katie, his nephews and his ex-wife Sue.

David Cassidy was hospitalized last week in critical condition as his organs began failing.

The Partridge Family -- a sitcom about a musical family -- ran 1970-74. It co-starred Cassidy's real-life step-mom Shirley Jones. Cassidy went on to tour as a solo artist for decades, retiring earlier this year after he was diagnosed with dementia. His singer-actor brother Shaun was known for co-starring in the TV series The Hardy Boys and his daughter Katie is a cast member of Arrow.
