Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Jennifer Hudson obtained a protective order Thursday after splitting from fiance David Otunga.

The 36-year-old singer and actress' rep confirmed to People that Hudson has called it quits with Otunga after 10 years of dating.

"They have been in the process of ending their relationship for a number of months," the rep said in a statement.

"Today, Jennifer requested and received a protective order against her ex-fiancé. Jennifer's actions are solely taken in the best interest of their son," the rep added.

Hudson and Otunga share 8-year-old son David Daniel Otunga, Jr. Otunga, a 37-year-old actor and retired wrestler, denied ever harming Hudson or their son in a statement through his attorney, Tracy Rizzo.

"Ms. Hudson filed a meritless Petition for Order of Protection in an effort to gain an unfair advantage in the custody dispute," Rizzo told E! News. "As a result of Mr. Otunga's career in the WWE, Ms. Hudson felt that she could give an award winning performance in court to portray herself as the victim."

"Mr. Otunga has never abused or harassed Ms. Hudson or their son, and it is unfortunate, especially in today's climate, that she would feel the need to make these false allegations against him," she added.

Hudson and Otunga got engaged in September 2008 after less than a year of dating, and welcomed David Jr. the next year. Hudson is known for competing on American Idol, and has since starred in Dreamgirls and Chi-Raq.
