The 2018 event will take place May 7 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The theme, also announced Wednesday, will be "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."

Rihanna made her Met Gala debut in a flowing, white Georges Chakra gown in 2007. She last wore an avant garde Commes des Garçons dress to the 2017 event, which honored designer Rei Kawakubo.

Clooney, meanwhile, attended her first and only Met Gala in a red Masion Margiela Artisanal gown by John Galliano in 2015. Versace, the artistic director of Versace, has been to 16 events, and is expected to wear one of her own designs in 2018.

The 2018 Met Gala will be followed by the opening of the "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" exhibit at the Costume Institute. The exhibit, which will feature Versace's work, will be on view May 10 through Oct. 8.
