Oct. 29 (UPI) -- British actress Claire Foy says -- contrary to social-media buzz -- she was not taken aback when U.S. comedian Adam Sandler repeatedly touched her knee during a talk-show appearance.

The pair sat and laughed side-by-side on a couch with Emma Thompson and Cara Delevingne during this weekend's edition of The Graham Norton Show.

"We don't believe anything was intended by Adam's gesture, and it has caused no offense to Claire," the actress' spokeswoman said in a statement to the New York Post Sunday.

The Independent, which reported the online backlash Sandler's behavior sparked as the episode aired, quoted Sandler's representative as saying the married father-of-two was merely making "a friendly gesture" toward Foy during their joint appearance.

Critics accused Sandler of disrespecting Foy and failing to recognize he was making her uncomfortable.
