Teddy Geiger is transitioning from male to female

Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Singer-songwriter Teddy Geiger has announced via Instagram he is transitioning from male to female.

"Okay... because u asked nicely... I am transitioning. I started talking about it with a couple of my close friends and family about a month ago and it's given me the courage to start the process," Geiger wrote in Friday's post. "I feel like the next step is to tell all y'all. So here goes. Love it or hate this is who i have been for a looooong time. I love u guys. Talk sooooon Byeeee."

Geiger, 29, was addressing a fan's question about his recent, changing appearance.

"Woke up to so much love. I have the best friends," he wrote after his fans offered messages of support on his Instagram page.

Geiger has penned hits for Shawn Mendes, One Direction, Tiesto, Empire of the Sun, James Blunt, Maroon 5, Birdy and DJ Snake. Among the most famous songs he has written are "Stitches," "Treat You Better," "Mercy" and "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back." He also gained fame for recording the singles "For You I Will (Confidence)" and "These Walls."
