Kairi Sane wins WWE's inaugural Mae Young Classic

Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Kairi Sane won WWE's first-ever network-exclusive Mae Young Classic Tuesday against former UFC fighter Shayna Baszler.

Sane known as The Pirate Princess who hails from Yamaguchi, Japan, was able to overcome the taller and more powerful Baszler after she connected with her Insane Elbow from the top rope for the three count.

Following her victory, Sane was presented with a bouquet of roses and the towering Mae Young Classic trophy as she stood by WWE COO Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.

"Women's wrestling in WWE has never been better, and it's only going to get stronger!" WWE ringside announcer Jim Ross said during the event which is named is after female wrestling legend Mae Young.

WWE then announced that Sane would be moving on to challenge for the vacant NXT Women's Championship at the company's upcoming NXT TakeOver: Houston event.

The NXT Women's Championship was relinquished by Asuka in August days after it was announced that The Empress of Tomorrow would be out of action due to a broken collarbone. Asuka, who will be joining WWE's Raw roster, enjoyed a historic, 500-plus day reign with the title.
