Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Neil Patrick Harris was feeling grateful for husband David Burtka on their third wedding anniversary.

The 44-year-old How I Met Your Mother alum dedicated a sweet post to Burtka on Instagram while celebrating three years of marriage with the 42-year-old actor Wednesday.

"I got married three years ago today. Thanks, David, for choosing me. For challenging me. For creating a family with me. For being a safe space that I can call home. And for your bountiful love. Happy Anniversary @dbelicious," he wrote.

Harris followed up with a message on Twitter that poked fun at the site's 140-character limit for posts.

"Happy Anniversary, David. It's so hard on Twitter to express my feelings toward you, with only 140 characters to do so. But I'll try: I lov," he tweeted.

Burtka said in a post on his own Instagram account that marrying Harris was "the best decision" of his life.

"I made the best decision of my life three years ago today. Thank you @nph for saying I do. Your love, strength and dedication to our family is unprecedented. You have made me a better man. Thank you," the actor gushed.

Harris and Burtka tied the knot in Italy in 2014 after 10 years of dating. The couple are parents to 6-year-old fraternal twins, daughter Harper Grace and son Gideon Scott.

"They're great personalities," Burtka said of his children in an interview with Hello! in January. "They're really great kids. We're really fortunate."

"No [plans to have more]," he added. "We just got a puppy. That's enough. That's enough."
