Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Aaron Rodgers says fame played a role in his breakup with Olivia Munn.

The 33-year-old NFL star opened up in the Sept. 18 issue of ESPN the Magazine about his split from the 37-year-old actress.

"When you are living out a relationship in the public eye, it's definitely ... it's difficult," Rodgers confessed in the interview.

"It has some extra constraints, because you have other opinions about your relationship, how if affects your work, and you know, just some inappropriate connections," he added.

Rodgers specifically called out speculation about Munn hurting his performance with the Green Bay Packers, calling such critics "misogynists." He said public scrutiny has also taken a toll on his friendships.

"[Celebrity leads to] decreased privacy," the NFL star said. "And increased strain or pressure or stress associated with relationships. Friendships and dating relationships."

People reported in April that Rodgers and Munn had called it quits after three years of dating.

"They have amicably ended their relationship of three years," a source said at the time. "[They] remain close friends and wish nothing but the best for each other moving forward."

Rodgers told ESPN the Magazine he hopes to isolate his personal life from his public life in the future.

"I think there should be a separating between your public life and your personal life," he said. "I've just always felt like there should be a time when you don't have to be on."
