"The Duke and Duchess are delighted to share a new official portrait of Prince George to mark [his royal highness'] 4th birthday tomorrow," the tweet said.

Royal photographer Chris Jackson took the portrait at the end of June prior to the royal family's trip to Poland and Germany.

"I'm thrilled and honoured that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen to release this portrait to celebrate Prince George's fourth birthday," Jackson said.

"He is such a happy little boy and certainly injects some fun into a photoshoot."

Prince George Alexander Louis' fourth birthday is Saturday.
