Google honors designer Eiko Ishioka with new Doodle

July 12 (UPI) -- Google is celebrating what would have been the 79th birthday of costume designer and artist Eiko Ishioka with a new Doodle.

Google's homepage features a slideshow showing artwork depicting Ishioka's work and designs from director Tarsem Singh's film The Fall.

Born and raised in Tokyo, Ishioka pursued a career in graphic design when few women were present in the industry. Google described her costume design work as "bold, surreal, and consistently unexpected."

"Earning her an Oscar, a Grammy, and two Tony nominations, Eiko Ishioka's work had a way of taking center stage no matter the medium. From print ads and album covers to costumes for film, theater and the Olympics, the iconic Japanese designer did it all during her decades-long career -- often unlike anyone before," Google wrote of her career.

Ishioka was recognized with an Academy Award for her costume design work on 1992's Bram Stoker's Dracula, a Grammy for creating the cover to Miles Davis' 1986 album Tutu and received two Tony Award nominations for her stage and costume design on Broadway play M. Butterfly.

Ishioka died of pancreatic cancer in 2012.
