June 21 (UPI) -- Britain's Prince Philip was admitted to a hospital Tuesday due to an infection from a pre-existing condition.

"Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

The 96-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II is being treated at London's King Edward VII Hospital. The Duke of Edinburgh was last seen Tuesday wearing a top hat for the first day of Royal Ascot in Berkshire, England, alongside the Queen and other members of the royal family.

The Queen will still be giving her annual speech at the opening Parliament Wednesday and will also be attending the Royal Ascot races.

Recently, Philip announced that he would be no longer taking part in public duties starting in August, but that he "may still choose to attend public events from time to time."
