Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles Police Department chief Charlie Beck organized and led the event. The pair lit the iconic Bat-signal, which was projected onto the City Hall building.

"Remembering the #BrightKnight, Adam West. Rest in peace, Batman," Garcetti tweeted.

West's former co-star Burt Ward, who played Batman's sidekick Robin, was among the stars at the ceremony.

"My friend Adam would want every single one of you to be incredibly happy and to be joyous because he spent his entire life as a performer making people happy, making them laugh and trying to make this world a better place," the actor said, according to ABC7.

West portrayed Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, in the Batman series, which ran from 1966 to 1968 on ABC, and in the 1966 film Batman. He died June 9 following a short battle with leukemia.
