June 6 (UPI) -- Celebrity couple George and Amal Clooney have welcomed twins.

The 56-year-old actor's rep confirmed in a statement to People that Amal gave birth Tuesday to daughter Ella and son Alexander.

"This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine," the rep said before joking, "George is sedated and should recover in a few days."

The Talk had reported in February that George and Amal were expecting twins in June. The actor skipped the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity ceremony in Yerevan, Armenia, last week, because Amal was due.

"I really would have been [in Yerevan] but if I came there and my wife had twins while I was there, I could never come home," he jokingly explained.

Sources told E! News in May that Amal was "healthy, excited and looking forward to becoming a mother." The 39-year-old human rights lawyer married George in Venice, Italy, in 2014 after a six-month engagement.
