June 5 (UPI) -- Samoa Joe was crowned the new No. 1 contender for Brock Lesnar's Universal Championship Sunday at Extreme Rules following a grueling Fatal 5-Way Match.

The main event of the night, the match placed under Extreme Rules, featured Joe, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Bray Wyatt and Finn Balor putting it all on the line for a chance to meet The Beast.

As things got underway, Joe quickly began to dominate with help from Wyatt as the pair formed a temporary alliance in order to decimate their opponents using chairs and steel steps. The partnership ended once Joe stopped The Eater of Worlds from pinning Rollins after landing Sister Abigail.

Once Reigns was able to Spear both Joe and Balor through the barricade and Rollins Frog Splashed Wyatt onto a table, the former Shield brothers re-ignited their rivalry for a more traditional match inside the ring.

After trading blows with The Architect, Reigns fought off the other competitors as they re-entered the ring, however, Balor was able to dodge The Big Dog's Spear and land the Coup de Grace. Joe then quickly reappeared and locked in the Coquina Clutch on Balor as he attempted to pin Reigns.

The submission maneuver left Balor unresponsive giving Joe the victory. The Destroyer is now set to face off against Lesnar at Great Balls of Fire for the Universal Championship on July 9.

Extreme Rules also featured Dean Ambrose defending his Intercontinental Championship against The Miz in match where the A-Lister can win the title if The Lunatic Fringe is disqualified.

Taking advantage of the stipulation, the competitive match reached a turning point once The Miz had his wife Maryse slap him in an attempt to make the referee believe that Ambrose was cheating and thus disqualified.

Realizing what The Miz was up to, the referee instead banned Maryse from ringside. With his back turned, The Miz then tossed Ambrose into the referee who believed that the champ had attacked him deliberately. As Ambrose argued not to be disqualified, The Miz landed a surprise Skull-Crushing Finale on his opponent for the three count and for the Intercontinental Championship.

Extreme Rules also featured Rich Swann and Sasha Banks defeating Noam Dar and Alicia Fox in a Mixed Tag Team Match, Elias Samson giving a musical performance that berated the town of Baltimore, Raw Women's Champion Alexa Bliss retaining her title against Bayley in a Kendo Stick on a Pole Match and Cesaro and Sheamus defeating The Hardy Boyz in a Steel Cage Match to become the new Raw Tag Team Champions.
