Kathy Griffin apologizes for bloody anti-Trump photo: 'I went way too far'

May 31 (UPI) -- Kath Griffin has apologized for taking part in a photo shoot that featured herself holding up a bloody, decapitated head resembling President Donald Trump.

"I sincerely apologize. I am just now seeing the reaction to these images. I'm a comic. I crossed the line. I move the line. Then I cross it. I went way too far," Griffin says in an apology video posted across her social media channels Tuesday.

"The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people. It wasn't funny. I get it. I've made a lot of mistakes in my career. I will continue. I ask your forgiveness. Taking down the image. I am going to ask the photographer to take down the image. And I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far. I made a mistake and I was wrong," she continued.

The photo was taken by celebrity photographer Tyler Shields who is known for taking violent images. Griffin and Shields posted their anti-Trump photos on their social media accounts Tuesday and faced backlash from Trump and other political figures.

"Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself. My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!" Trump wrote on Twitter.

Donald Trump Jr. condemned the photo on the social media site stating, "Disgusting but not surprising. This is the left today. They consider this acceptable. Imagine a conservative did this to Obama as POTUS?"

Chelsea Clinton also shared her thoughts on Twitter noting, "This is vile and wrong. It is never funny to joke about killing a president."

The image elicited a response from the U.S. Secret Service after users on Twitter began sending the image to the official Twitter account of the law enforcement agency.

"The U.S. Secret Service has a critical mission. It is always unfortunate when people make statements that could be perceived as threats. We don't have the luxury of knowing a person's intent. Each alleged or perceived threat has to be investigated thoroughly which taxes Secret Service manpower and resources that could be utilized elsewhere," the Secret Service said in a statement after tweeting that they were investigating the matter.

The controversy has cost Griffin her partnership with Squatty Potty, a line of footstools for toilets who is now pulling a new ad campaign featuring the 56-year-old after calling the photos "deeply inappropriate."

Griffin's relationship with CNN has also been affected as the network has decided to fire the comedian who is the longtime co-host of the company's annual New Year's Eve coverage.

"CNN has terminated our agreement with Kathy Griffin to appear on our New Year's Eve program," CNN tweeted.

"We found what she did disgusting and offensive," CNN orginally said in a statement.
