May 7 (UPI) -- The MTV Movie & TV Awards show distinguished itself for gender neutrality Sunday night when Asia Kate Dillon presented the best actor award to Emma Watson.

"Tonight, we celebrate portrayals of the human experience," Dillon said, "because the only distinction we should be making when it comes to awards is between each outstanding performance."

Then came Best Kiss, which launched a thousand tweets.

Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome took home the Golden Popcorn trophy for their same-sex scene in the critically-acclaimed Moonlight.

"This award is bigger than Jharrel and I," Sanders said. "This represent more than a kiss. This is for those who feel like the others, the misfits. This represents us."

Sanders and Jerome won over Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in La La Land, Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in Beauty and the Beast, Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard in Empire and Zac Efron and Anna Kendrick in Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates.

"I think it is safe to say that it is OK for us young performers, especially us minority performers, to step out of the box," Jerome said. "This award is for that. It's for us artists who are out there, who need to do whatever it takes to get people to wake up."

While they didn't re-create their cinematic kiss, Jerome gave Sanders a finger kiss on the lips.
