Don Rickles, legendary comic, dead at 90

April 6 (UPI) -- Legendary comic Don Rickles died Thursday at age 90.

The actor and insult comic, who was sarcastically known as "Mr. Warmth," died at his home in Los Angeles of kidney failure, publicist Paul Shefrin confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

"90 years with Don Rickles weren't enough. One of the sweetest and most lovely people I had the pleasure of knowing. We miss you already," late-night host Jimmy Kimmel tweeted in response to the news.

Rickles caught Frank Sinatra's attention as a stand-up comedian in the 1950s, and made his film debut in the 1958 movie Run Silent, Run Deep. He gained fame as a frequent guest on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson in the 1960s.

Rickles appeared as an actor on The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Andy Griffith Show and Gilligan's Island, and hosted a short-lived variety show, The Don Rickles Show, in 1968. He later roasted stars on The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast and at The Friar's Club.

In his later years, Rickles published a memoir, Rickles' Book, and collaborated with John Landis on the HBO documentary Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project. He won an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety of Music Program for the special.

Rickles is survived by his wife Barbara Sklar, whom he married in 1965, and daughter Mindy Rickles. Sources told TMZ Sklar was by the comic's side at the time of his death.
