March 18 (UPI) -- Actor Rob Lowe has reunited with author S.E. Hinton, who penned the book upon which one of his most famous movies was based -- The Outsiders.

"Spent the morning hanging out with @RobLowe & his son, Johnny. Rob can still fit in his Outsiders [flannels,] but the DX shirt fits his son!" Hinton tweeted Friday, which was Lowe's 53rd birthday.

"Birthday visit to where it all started. Thirty five years ago to the day. Passing the torch (or towel?)" Lowe said in an Instagram post.

The message accompanied a photo of Lowe and his son standing in front of the Oklahoma house where The Outsiders was filmed. The shot shows both Lowes wearing clothes similar to those worn by the actor as his character, gas-station worker Sodapop Curtis.

A second, Instagram post featured an image of Lowe and his son arm-wrestling on a table. It was captioned: "Soda vs Soda 2.0 #StayGold #movie #SecretProject."

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the 1983, young-adult classic helped launch the careers of Lowe, C. Thomas Howell, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Diane Lane, Matt Dillon and Emilio Estevez. Hinton's other works include Tex, Rumble Fish, That Was Then, This Is Now and Taming the Star Runner. She still lives in Oklahoma.
