March 14 (UPI) -- The MTV Movie Awards are expanding to include television categories for the first time in 25 years.

Now branded the MTV Movie & TV Awards, the annual ceremony will feature both film and television stars as they compete to win the network's signature golden popcorn statue.

"We're living in a golden age of content, and great storytelling and characters resonate regardless of whether you're watching it in a theater or on TV," Chris McCarthy, president of MTV, said in a press release.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards is set to air live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on May 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

The event will be preceded by a Movie & Television festival that will include live performances and special guests leading up to the ceremony.
