March 2 (UPI) -- Ricki Lake detailed her ex-husband Christian Evans' battle with bipolar disorder announcing that he died due to suicide.

"I have to spread the word about recognizing this disorder and getting treatment as soon as possible," the former talk show host shared in a new interview with People magazine.

"Christian didn't want to be labeled as bipolar, but he admitted he was in the note he left. That was him finally owning it. That was him giving me permission to tell his story," she continued.

Despite being divorced, Lake explained how she remained living with Evans, a jewelry designer until a bipolar episode led to Evans moving out.

"I knew he was having an episode, and there was nothing I could do," Lake said before his sister informed her that he had left a suicide note. "I knew right then that he was gone. Everybody thought he was missing, but I knew."

Evans was found in his car dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. "The struggle was just too much for him," Lake said. "He did the best he could."

Lake announced Evans death on social media in February where she mourned his passing writing, "I am a greater person for having known him and spent the past 6 and a half years of my life with him. He was a man of love and what mends my broken heart today is knowing that he is finally at peace and his spirit is free. Rest in peace, my love."

The pair were engaged in August of 2011 before tying the knot in April of 2012. The pair remained married for two years before Lake filed for divorce in October of 2014 citing irreconcilable differences.
