Feb. 20 (UPI) -- A restaurant inspired by classic sitcom Golden Girls and one of its principal stars Rue McClanahan opened in New York City.

Titled Rue La Rue Cafe, the eatery is located in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood and serves beer, recipes from the cast and cheesecakes inspired by each character, among other items The New York Times reported.

Co-owned by McClanahan's son Mark Bish and the star's longtime friend Michael J. LaRue who manages her estate, the restaurant prominently displays memorabilia from the series including costumes, photos and a pair of pumps worn by McClanahan on the pilot episode.

"There's never a time when The Golden Girls is not playing on this globe," LaRue said. "It taps into something that we all share as human beings — a fear that as we age we're going to become irrelevant and alone. The show is a tonic for that fear. It says you can still look good and have sex and have a very full life, with friends."

"She was a very talented actress, but better than that, she was a wonderful friend," LaRue told CNN about McClanahan. "She was a loving, kind, generous person and I'm really honored to be able to do this little bit to keep her legacy alive."

The cafe has posted videos and photos from the location on their official Facebook page to give fans a look inside their doors.
