Feb. 3 (UPI) -- New 24: Legacy star Corey Hawkins says he was lucky to get advice and blessings from former star Kiefer Sutherland.

"He was almost more pumped about it than I was about it. And he is really excited about this new idea and Kiefer gave me a lot of great advice in terms of going through this as an actor because it is really challenging," he continued.

Sutherland famously portrayed Counter Terrorist Unit agent Jack Bauer for 9 seasons on 24 from 2001-2014 including a limited 12 episode series.

Now Hawkins is taking over in the lead role as Army Ranger Eric Carter as he races against the clock to save the United States from a terrorist threat.

"I was such a fan and still am of the show. The real-time premise changed the face of television," Hawkins previously said about filling in for Sutherland . "The idea of a new hero for a new day sang to me."
