Book of Swords will be edited by long-time Martin collaborator Gardner Dozois and feature fifteen short stories in total written by authors Matthew Hughes, K.J. Parker, Scott Lynch, Robin Hobb, Garth Nix, C.J. Cherryh, Elizabeth Bear, Ellen Kushner, Ken Liu, Danial Abraham, Cecelia Holland and Peter S. Beagle.

Martin's section will detail the the reigns of the second and third Targaryen kings, Aenys I and Maegor the Cruel who ruled the world of Westeros roughly 250 years before the start of Game of Thrones.

The short story comes as fans eagerly await the long delayed next entry in the Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter.

"Not done yet, but I've made progress. But not as much as I hoped a year ago, when I thought to be done by now. I think it will be out this year. (But hey, I thought the same thing last year)," Martin said in January of the novel.
