PARIS, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore are among the stars who went makeup-free for the 2017 Pirelli calendar.

German photographer Peter Lindbergh captured the 49-year-old Australian actress and 55-year-old American star barefaced for the annual publication, which was unveiled Tuesday in Paris.

"It's a choice [to go makeup-free], and we're allowed to have those choices, and that's a very important conversation for the next generation, for women and little girls," Kidman said at the event, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Helen Mirren, Uma Thurman, Robin Wright, Penelope Cruz, Kate Winslet, Jessica Chastain, Lea Seydoux, Alicia Vikander, Rooney Mara, Lupita Nyong'o, Zhang Ziyi, Charlotte Rampling and Anastasia Ignatova also posed for the unretouched 2017 edition. Lindbergh said in an interview with Pirelli that he wanted to use the calendar "to make a statement for a different kind of beauty."

"The current system promotes only one kind of beauty that is very connected to youth and perfection because it is a system based on consumption, whose idea of beauty doesn't have anything to do with reality and with women," he said.

"I think we need to take a step back and realize that this idea of beauty does not help women and on the contrary makes them unhappy. I want to use the Pirelli platform to send another message and the message is that beauty is much more than what we used to seeing in commercials," he added.

The Pirelli calendar was first published in the 1960s, and was previously known for its revealing shots of models. Photographer Annie Leibovitz said the company was working "to make a departure from the past" after shooting the 2016 edition.
