LOS ANGELES, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Tika Sumpter told her fans on social media that her mother, Janice Acquista, was arrested in North Carolina for an overdue library book.

"Make sure you turn in your library books North Carolina! My mom was just arrested for having a late fee of 10 dollars on an overdue book!," the Southside With You star noted on Twitter Monday.

"An overdue book should NEVER result in a warrant. This is a legal scam," she continued, tagging the Smithfield County library, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory and North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper.

After confirming with followers that she was indeed telling the truth, Sumpter then revealed that her mother was released from jail and that the book in question had been returned a while back but that "someone didn't put it in the system."

"She's out now. Every cop at the jail thought it was absolutely ridiculous. They couldn't even believe it. Smh," she wrote.

According to Page Six, the Johnson Country Sheriff's Office said they arrested Acquista for writing a bad check. It's not known if the check was for the fine for the overdue book.

Sumpter, also known for her time on Gossip Girl, last made headlines in October when she welcomed her first child, a daughter named Ella-Loren.
