LOS ANGELES, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Gigi Hadid says Tommy Hilfiger's recent remark about her weight were taken out of context.

The 21-year-old model defended the designer in an interview with Access Hollywood this week after Hilfiger revealed she once wore a poncho in his runway show because she wasn't "quite as thin" as the other models.

"It's funny because people think it's something I wasn't aware of," Hadid said. "I know that when Tommy said it last week it was in context of a larger story that wasn't shown."

"Tommy was rooting for me, and that, above all -- regardless of what the stylist of that season said or what he put me in -- Tommy wanted me in the show and Tommy was pushing for me and Tommy loved my curves," she asserted.

Hilfiger had said last week on Yahoo! Style that his casting director put Hadid in an oversized poncho in his New York Fashion Week show in February 2015 because of her size. He later told Page Six that he disagreed with the decision.

"The casting people put Gigi in the poncho, and I was not happy. I was saying, 'Don't hide her body,'" he said. "The suggestion that I thought she wasn't thin enough upsets me to no end. Gigi is the epitome of perfection."

Hadid is known for her modeling work with Guess, Versace and Chanel, and launched a Tommy x Gigi collection with Hilfiger in the fall. She previously defended her curves after social media users criticized her looks in a September 2015 Tommy Hilfiger show.

"No, I don't have the same body type as the other models in shows," the model wrote. "I represent a body image that wasn't accepted in high-fashion before, and I'm very lucky to be supported by the designers, stylists, and editors that I am."

"Yes, I have boobs, I have abs, I have a butt, I have thighs, but I'm not asking for special treatment," she continued. "Your mean comments don't make me want to change my body, they don't make me want to say no to the designers that ask me to be in their shows, and they definitely don't change the designers opinions of me."
